Drop into Radio Vik for some Gentle Audio
Somewhere in the middle of 1996, Vik came across a delicious collection on Instinct Records - The Future Sound of Jazz. On that collection, there is a marvelous remix by Aphex Twin of "Journey." EZ meets ambient on a cloud of cotton candy. Word spread of The Gentle People and yet finding their releases in the Sates was quite a chore. Thankfully, after a series of EPs and 12" releases, The Gentle People have brought forth a full length on Rephlex Records. Still an import on these US shores, it is likely to be easier to find as it is distributed by those fine folks at EFA (Schulmadchen/Gert Wilden/Lucertrola).
To say "Soundtracks for Living" is a delight would be an understatement. This is the future of EZ...right here...right now...and in your living room. Smooth loop of sparkling bells and sultry drums. Inviting vocals and happy giggles. It combines the best of that late '60s/early '70s poly-pop-a-gogo sound with the now sound of chill-out rooms and quiet ambience. It's no wonder the color scheme is pink...this is sonic bubblegum - great soft chunks of juicy aural sugar to ease your day and your mind.
Besides the infectious "Journey" (and its soothing reprise), Vik finds himself humming the Bacharach-esque pop of "Soundtrack of Life", soaking in the 101 Strings lushness of "Emotion Heater" and "Le Tunnel de L'amour" (both with sinfully sexy vocals), drifting in an ocean of modern exotica with "Tiki Mix" and mumbling "She's Laurie Lemans" from "Laurie's Theme." The second half of this album provides some of the most amazing mood music this side of the Melachrino Strings.
