So much to read...so little time. Seems just when Vik catches up, he stumbles on three more swinging 'zines or books or catalogs. And into the new stack they go!!! If things don't change often, it's only because Vik doesn't have anything new to read.
Cheeseball A trip to the land of Combustible gave Vik the chsnce to meet the near legendary Miss Stacy. This Boston based publisher puts out the swelligant Cheeseball 'zine. The latest issue is also a one year anniversary blast featuring a great tiki cover. Inside you'll find coverage of Four Piece Suit, Cake, a review of 1996 releases, the art of Rick Wentworth, Very Vicky comic and the best damn rant against the martini ever!!! Vik also hears talk of Cheeseball hitting the web soon...stay tuned.
Issues are $1.50 (complimentary in Boston) and can be gotten from Cheeseball, 510 Commonwealth Ave. #123, Boston, MA 02215 or email msstacey@ix.netcom.com Exotica/Et Cetera
Every once in a while, a great idea gets even better. Preston Peek's "Vinyl Lives" was one of the most comprehensive one stop shopping lists ever (this side of Goldmine). Always quality merchandise and filled with great prices, it seemed impossible to improve on...that is until Exotica/Et Cetera. Preston calls this a "zinealog" and a better term couldn't be coined. One part catalog of more than 400 Clean & Original Issue LPs for sale--a few highlights include Moon Gas, Dennis the Menace, Orienta, Les Baxter's "Barbarian", Comstock's "Music From Outer Space", Garcia's "Fantastica", Mansfield's "Panic Button"--and on and on.; one part magazine with articles on Jayne Mansfield cover art, Brother Cleve's "The Esquivel Page" (a regular column that keeps all abreast of The Maestro's activities down in Mexico City as well as historical gems from his past), Capitol Record art director Jim Silke on those wonderful covers of yore and new release reviews. With out a doubt...essential reading and shopping all in one place!
Free sample issue, otherwise $10 for a 6 issue/one year sub in US ($30 Priority Mail), $15 Canada, $30 non-US. Scram This one came to Vik almost completely by accident. While cleaning up the lounge one evening, someone had put it in the recycling box and Vik was intrigued by the exotic cover. Inside, he found excellent articles about the Nutty Squirrels, Spy Jazz (by Vik's Lounge friend David Smay), a Jack Diamond Top 20 Spy Jazz list, mortuary cosmetics, a Divine Comedy interview and so much more. A thick 'zine with some great graphics covering a variety of topics (there is more to life than lounge, kids....). Vik has never seen another copy again.
Subscriptions are $16 (for the next four issues). Send cash (preferred) or check payable to Kim Cooper to Kim Cooper PO Box 461626, Hollywood, CA 90046-1626.
